The route is color coded to indicate what level of rider is recommended for each section. Green represents multi-use paths, protected infrastructure, or quiet residential streets. Blue is used for bike lanes, shared low-traffic commercial streets, or busier residential. Black represents areas that only the most advanced riders would feel comfortable on: busy streets without bike lanes, very difficult intersections, or Bend’s highest traffic volume areas – namely 3rd, Hwy 20 and Hwy 97. Black can also represent unbuilt sections.

As of May 2023, there is construction underway to the east of Caldera High School. Neither a path nor roads connect through to High Desert Middle School.

City of Bend planned projects

New development • TBD

There are several new developments planned for the area between Caldera High School and High Desert Middle School. The Easton development is currently under construction and includes many new asphalt multi-use paths. To the east of that development is the Southeast Expansion Area which does not have specific development plans at this time.

Our suggestions

Route changes

This route should not attempt to cross 97 at Pinebrook. The Murphy overpass is less than a block south and would provide a much better connection to Key Route 10. Traveling along Pinebrook also necessitates riding on 3rd St – one of the most difficult biking streets in Bend. Using Murphy instead would immediately make this route safer.

Most critical improvements

  • Do not cross 97 at Pinebrook. That will never be safe for children.
  • The unbuilt sections should be designed as asphalt multi-use paths.
  • Murphy needs protected infrastructure to be safe for all ages and all abilities.
