Compass Park to New Central Library

-by Patrick Walsh

The new central library is now open! We’re excited at BendBikes about this incredible new community resource and hope you have a chance to visit soon.

We’ve received a lot of questions about the best low-stress bike routes to reach the library from Bend’s west side. So this month, we are continuing the theme from last month with a new route to the Central Library, this time from the west.

Compass Park to Portland Avenue:

  • Starting at Compass Park, head east on NW Drouillard Ave. Turn right, then left onto NW Hartford Ave.
  • From there, turn left onto NW 15th St, part of the newly completed Bend Bikeways route featuring new traffic diverters and neighborhood greenway improvements.
  • Continue south on NW 15th St, then turn right onto NW Milwaukee Ave. Ride east past Newport Market before turning left onto NW 11th St. Cross Galveston Ave and turn right onto NW Portland Ave.

Portland Avenue to Juniper Park:

  • Follow Portland Ave east and use the newly constructed bike and pedestrian crossing at Wall St, where the route becomes Olney Ave.
  • Continue on Olney Ave to NE 6th St, then turn right and head south toward Greenwood Ave.
  • Use the protected crossing at NE 6th St and Greenwood Ave, then continue south into Juniper Park.

Juniper Park to the Central Library

  • Continue southeast through Juniper Park, then cross the roundabout at Franklin Ave and NE 8th St before connecting to the Coyner Trail toward Ponderosa Park.
  • Near the sports fields at Ponderosa Park, cross SE 15th St onto SE Tempest Dr and continue east until briefly connecting with the Larkspur Trail.
  • Leave the trail at the Airpark Dr junction. Turn left onto Airpark Dr, then quickly turn right onto Thomas Dr. Continue to SE Philly Ave, turn left, and follow it east to SE 27th St.
  • From there, turn right onto the newly completed multi-use path along SE 27th St. Continue south through the Reed Market Rd intersection, and you’ll soon see the new library on your left. Plentiful bike parking is available on site!

The City of Bend continues to make bicycle improvements across East Bend, so stay tuned for additional route options as new connections are completed.
