Alpenglow to Drake: From one of Bend’s newest parks to one of the oldest
Alpenglow Park, opened three years ago, has become a popular destination for many southeast Bend residents – including myself. Here’s an easy, 4.7-mile ride from one of Bend Park and Recreation’s newest parks to Drake Park, one of the oldest.
I tried to stay off busier streets with car traffic (Murphy Road, Brosterhaus, Reed Market) and rode on safer streets in quieter, low-traffic neighborhoods. This required riding down a few alleys, but it was well worth it to get from the southeast side into downtown to Drake Park.
From Alpenglow Park to the Foxborough neighborhood:
- Ride across the multi-use bridge on the west side of the park onto SE Cougar Peak Drive
- At Murphy Road, cross the crosswalk and turn right. Take an immediate right into the alley and take Southeast Larkspur Loop.
- After a second alley, Southeast Larkspur Loop turns into Fairfield Drive.
- Turn left on Fox Run Lane onto American Lane
Getting to the Canal Trail
- Turn left on Brentwood Avenue
- Turn right on American Loop
- This drops you back onto to American Lane and the Central Oregon Canal Trail
- Take a left on the canal trail, which runs parallel to Reed Market Road
North on Fifth Street and West on Second
- At SE Fifth Street, cross the crosswalk and ride north on Fifth.
- Take a left on Wilson Avenue
- Cross Third Street and take a right on SE Second Street
From Crux to Drake Park
- Turn left on SE Aune Street and past Crux
- Turn left on SW Industrial Way
- Turn right on SW Bond Street
- Take Bond Street into downtown and take a left on NW Minnesota Avenue
- Walk your bike through the alley near Belllatazza coffee shop
- You are now at The Commons. From there, several trails will take you to Drake Park.
