Columbia Park to Pine Nursery

Columbia Park to Newport Ave

  • Starting at Columbia Park, ride north on NW Columbia St to NW Galveston Ave.
  • Cross Galveston carefully.  This crossing and others along Galveston will be improved dramatically in the next couple of years as Galveston is rebuilt–use caution now!
  • Continue on Galveston one block north and turn east (right) on NW Hartford Ave.
  • At NW Harmon St, turn left and continue north along Harmon Park to NW Nashville Ave.
  • Turn east (right) onto NW Nashville Ave.  Here you can leave the route, cross the Drake Park pedestrian bridge and ride into downtown through the park.
  • Turn north (left) onto NW Drake Rd and follow it as it winds its way to NW Newport Ave.
  • Cross busy Newport Ave carefully.  There is a marked crosswalk at the west side of the intersection.

Newport Ave to Mt Washington Dr

  • After crossing Newport Ave, turn west (left) onto Newport Ave to NW Awbrey Rd.
  • Turn north (right) onto NW Awbrey Rd for about a block.
  • Turn northeast (right) onto NW 1st St and continue to NW Portland Ave.  This is another busy intersection–cross carefully!  Continue north on 1st St to the end of the street.
  • At the end of 1st St, continue north along the unpaved, but firm and obstruction free Deschutes River Trail.  Watch the waterfowl and other birds and be considerate of all the other trail users.  In about Âľ mile, the trail becomes very steep up to NW Mt Washington Dr.  Many people push their bikes up this short, steep hill to Mt Washington Dr.

Mt Washington Dr to the North Unit Canal

  • At the top of the hill, turn north (right) onto the shared use path along NW Mt Washington Dr.  At the bottom of the hill, the shared use path ends–get into the bike lane and continue along Mt Washington as it turns east and intersects with NE 3rd St (US 20) at a very big intersection.  Here you can stay in the bike lane, which is sandwiched between a throughlane and the right-turn lane, or get up on the sidewalk and use the crosswalk to cross 3rd St.
  • After crossing 3rd St, the street becomes NE Boyd Acres Rd.  Follow it east under the Parkway and across the railroad tracks, continuing to the traffic light at Boyd Acres Rd.
  • Use a two-stage left turn with the traffic light to turn north along Boyd Acres and continue on Boyd Acres Rd for just under ÂĽ mile to the North Unit Canal.  Do not cross the bridge over the second canal, the Pilot Butte Canal.
  • Immediately after crossing the bridge over the North Unit Canal, turn east (right) onto the unpaved trail along the canal.
Mt Washington Drive to the North Unit Canal

North Unit Canal to Pine Nursery Park

  • Continue east and north along the trail paralleling the North Unit Canal.  This trail is rough, with large cobbles, and is steep where it descends next to the waterfall in the canal.  There are also a couple gates with only narrow openings which may require riders to dismount and push through the gates.
  • Cross NE Brinson Blvd and continue along the canal trail.
  • Cross NE Purcell  Blvd and continue along the canal trail.
  • Cross underneath NE Empire Ave and turn northwest (left) onto the paved trail into Pine Nursery Park.
  • Enjoy the park!

Note:  Several projects are in the works that will offer other ways to get from Columbia Park to Pine Nursery Park.  These projects include the Bend Bikeway Project, the Butler Market Rd Project, and resurfacing of the North Unit Canal Trail from Brinson Ave to Pine Nursery Park.  That said, the route described here will still be a useful route and may be preferred by those living north of Columbia Park.
