This in from Camp Fire Central Oregon.
In partnership with Empowering Youth Bicycle Program, Commute Options, and Crook County Health Department, Camp Fire is hosting teen programs in both Bend and Prineville to promote safe cycling, skill building in bike maintenance and repair, and community service.
For 5 hours a day for 4 days, teens going into 7th – 10th grade will learn to ride safely on the streets of their community (programming by Crook County Health and Commute Options) and do basic bike maintenance and repairs, on their own bikes and on donated bikes that will be fixed and returned to those in need in our community (programming by Empowering Youth Bicycle Program.) This program operates with a pay-it-forward model, so youth who participate can earn themselves a bike as well!
- Youth do not need to own a bike to participate.
- Program is offered with sliding scale pricing, so ALL youth are eligible to participate, regardless of their ability to pay.
- Teens from all backgrounds and experience levels welcome!
The smaller our ratios, the more the teens will learn. The more volunteers we have, the more spots we have for participants. We will be splitting the group in two and while one group works, the other group rides. We are looking for volunteers who have experience working on bicycles and are interested in teaching teens how to solve common problems with brakes, gears, fixing flats, etc.
The opportunity is as follows:
- Prineville: June 19-22, M-Th, 10 am – 3 pm
- Bend: July 17-20, M-Th, 10 am – 3 pm
If the programs fill, there will be 2 two hour sessions each day, from 10:15-12:15 and 12:45 – 2:45. We are looking for 2 volunteers for each session. You do not have to commit to all sessions. We would love to have varying expertise.
