Cyclist Access to Safe Crossings
Location: Intersection of US Hwy 20 (Greenwood Ave) & NE 6th St., Bend, Oregon
Oregon Department of Transportation’s 2022 median/RRFB project provides no signed or striped bicycle route from NE 6th to the beacon and leaves a curb that appears flush but drops ~6″, causing crashes. Oregon law treats e-bikes as bicycles and prohibits them from riding on sidewalks; ODOT is obligated under the Bike Bill and MUTCD/ODOT design standards to provide a continuous, rideable bicycle facility or shared-use path to the actuator. Designing crossings that riders can’t lawfully and safely reach is ODOT’s failure and their responsibility to correct.
