DESCRIPTION:The Bikey Book Club listened to a podcast of an interview with Anna Zivarts\, the author of When Driving Is Not An Option:  Steering Away from Car Dependency..  We’ll be reading the book this month and discussing it at our meeting in September.  This book is a good introduction to challenges Bend Bikes and Commute Options are sponsoring in September and early October:  the Bike\, Walk\, Roll Challenge and the Week Without Driving Challenge.  Ms. Zivarts was the founder of the Week Without Driving– it is a good way to learn what life would be like if we could not drive. \nWhen Driving Is Not An Option starts with a description of the approximately 31% of people who cannot drive.  It continues with moving stories from people who cannot drive and how they must compromise their lives in ways that feel foreign to those of us who do drive.  She then describes why our current institutions serve people who cannot drive so poorly–have you ever thought about why non-transit riders make up the boards who make decisions about public transit?   \nYou can contact davidg@bendbikes.org or jime@bendbikes.org for more information. \nUpcoming schedule: Downtown Bend Library\, Meyers Room \nSeptember 23\, 6:30-7:45; When Driving is Not an Option by Anna Zivarts

SUMMARY:World Remembrance Day for Road Crash Victims
DESCRIPTION:On November 17\, members of the community will gather at noon at the Peace Corner in downtown Bend to remember those in our community and around the world who have been the victims of traffic violence. In the United Staes over 40\,000 people are killed annually in roadway crashes. The rate of deaths in the United States in the highest of the 29 highest income countries in the world. Since January 1\, 2024\, the Bend Police Department has responded to 1623 crashes including one fatality. \nWe will pause on this day to read the proclamation passed by the Bend City Council and then hear from community members who have been impacted by traffic violence. For these crashes not only impact the victims and their families but also friends and other community members. In addition\, we will remember those who provide the emergency services to the victims as well as the medical and rehabilitation care. \nAfter the memorial event\, we will make a memorial bike ride along NW Wall Street\, then NW Riverside Drive by Drake Park. The ride will then return to the Peace Corner along NW Harmon Blvd. and NW Newport Ave. \nPlease plan to join us as we remember those lost and injured as well as to advocate for better support for safe streets.
